The ADAC has tested 16 helmets for skiers and snowboarders. The Foundation "Safety in skiing" (SIS) tested nine back protectors with the German Ski Association and the Technical University of Munich. Of 16 helmets, 13 cut "Good" and three "satisfying" from. Except for one "unsatisfactory" When it comes to shock absorption for a protector, almost all back protectors are recommended. The conclusion of the testers: The most expensive head and back protection does not have to be the best, as our click show shows.

Test winner: ski helmet with six different sizes
Test winner with the grade "Good" is the "Head sensor" which is equally robust and flexible: with six size gradations and many adjustment options, it fits almost everyone. However, he could not convince "Cébé Spyner Flex" – it turned out to be very difficult in the test and is too small.
Needs improvement: shock absorption properties of the helmets
"Ski helmets can be lifesavers, but they don’t offer 100 percent protection either" warn the testers. According to ADAC, there is still room for improvement, especially with regard to the shock absorption properties. So it falls "Giro Seam" – with just under 200 euros in the upper price segment – due to particularly poor shock absorption values.
Cross-country skiing in Tyrol: 3 nights with half board and cross-country ski pass from 159, – Euro / p.p. Bavaria: Top offer with 7 nights and ski pass from 209, – Euro / p.p. Salzburger Land: 1 day in a 4.5 * hotel with full board from 115, – Euro / p.p.
Indispensable: good ventilation in the ski helmet
The ventilation of many helmets can also be improved – because that also increases wearing comfort. Since a ski helmet is worn for several hours in different temperature conditions and during physical exertion, good climate regulation is essential, according to ADAC.
Important: "CE EN 1077"-Labelling
The ADAC recommends avoiding helmets with brittle plastic sun visors or sharp edges. Because they significantly increase the risk of injury. Generally the marking is "CE EN 1077" important. Only this label guarantees that the selected model is head protection tested according to the special criteria for ski and snowboard helmets.
Essential: fitting, also with ski goggles
The ADAC also recommends trying on helmets before buying: they shouldn’t sit too loosely and shouldn’t slip. If you already have ski goggles and want to continue using them, you should take them with you to try on. Because even the best helmet can be uncomfortable when combined with the wrong glasses.
Lifesaving: the back protector
Back armor is mainly available in two versions: as pure protectors that are attached to the body with shoulder and waist belts, or the protector vests mainly tested by the SIS, in which the protector is made of a thin, sleeveless protector mostly made of mesh or stretch material Vest is attached. The construction of the actual protector element also differs depending on the manufacturer: from the hard shell protector, which protects particularly well against penetration by sharp objects, to soft foam sheets that guarantee great freedom of movement. The plastic plates can be moved forwards when the body is bent, but prevent the spine from overstretching backwards. In the event of a fall, they cushion the impact on the endangered parts of the body by absorbing kinetic energy and distributing it via the protector.
Necessary: ??perfect protector size
The SIS testers noticed that the protectors cover very different protection zones. Some only protect the spine, others are particularly wide in the shoulder area, others again in the area of ??the costal arches or in the lumbar area. “You have to make sure that you choose the right size,” recommends the test manager and DSV safety expert. Hence the conclusion: a fitting in the store is essential!

Back to the travel guide overview
While some are already planning their first bike tour in the country, many skiers start their skiing holiday in spring for their most beautiful snow experiences. There are plenty of reasons for this: Soft firn snow makes the descent a real pleasure, the snack tastes twice as good on the sun terrace, and a flirt at the snow bar is also more relaxed under the warming rays of the sun. In the high-altitude ski areas of Austria, South Tyrol and Switzerland it is said "Snow juchee" until the beginning of May. Take a look at the spring ski areas in our photo series.

Spring skiing from 1800 meters altitude
At the top of the hit list of spring skiers is Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. The reason is clear: In Austria’s highest church village, winter sports enjoyment begins where it ends elsewhere – namely at 1,800 meters above sea level. The lifts at Festkogl, Hoher Mut and Wurmkogl buzz until the beginning of May. The second big plus on the Innerötztal slopes are the refreshment stops. The numerous three-thousand-meter peaks are within reach from almost every sun terrace – not to mention culinary delicacies. (Www.obergurgl.com)
Piste Remmidemmi in Ischgl
Lack of snow is a foreign word and boredom anyway – spring skiers who want to party and remmidemmi make a pilgrimage to Ischgl every year at the end of the winter on the slopes. Almost 90 percent of all slopes in the Silvretta Arena are over 2000 meters above sea level. One party chases the next, the superstars give themselves up to the legendary "Top of the Mountain"-Concerts in hand. This winter, the R&B diva Alicia Keys melt the snow with a glittering final concert. The mountain restaurant Pardorama on the Pardatschgrat promises grandiose views and many a deep look into the eyes. (www.ischgl.com)
Guaranteed snow in the Salzburg region
The ski season in Obertauern in the Salzburger Land is also record-breaking – almost half a year. Few ski areas in Austria are as snow-reliable as the slopes to the right and left of the Radstätter Tauern Pass. No wonder: the valley stations start at a height of 1700 meters, and the clouds accumulate on the main Alpine ridge and dump precious white until the beginning of May. The "Tauern circuit" on skis or snowboards is as mandatory as stopping at the mountain station of the Zehnerkar gondola. After all, there is the much-vaunted chamois milk, the secret of which is certainly a good portion of rum. (www.obertauern.com)
Panoramic views in South Tyrol
In South Tyrol it could be the red glass that crowns the spring ski day. You can even ski south of the main Alpine ridge until the beginning of May. Sulden am Ortler is one of the high-altitude ski areas with guaranteed snow. The high peaks around the König Ortler guarantee enjoyable skiing and professional skiing fun into May. In addition to sun, firn and downhill fun, South Tyrolean comfort and delicacies are right at the top of the hit list. The Rifugio Madriccio is a place for connoisseurs: a wonderful sun terrace, full of panoramic views and chatting with relaxed Italians on the slopes or – even better – raving about the good cuisine and the excellent espresso. (www.sulden.com)
Lots of black slopes in Andermatt
The slopes in Andermatt are ambitious. After all, almost 40 percent of the runs are marked in black – for experts. The place of skiing is the Gemsstock with its north-facing long and crisp runs. The highlight is the Bernhard Russi downhill run, named after the Andermatt Olympic and world champion. In addition, a lot of deep snow slopes invite freeriders to powder. The Gadä Bar not far from Gurschenalp is hip for everyone. Where the cows are in summer, skiers come in winter. (www.andermatt.ch)
Sun skiing and duty free shopping
This wonderful mix is ??possible in Livigno, which invites you to enjoy the slopes and duty-free shopping at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The snowy, sunny area between Engadin and Valtellina guarantees white slopes when the cyclamen are already blooming elsewhere. That is why Livigno is at the top of the hit list of freeriders who are enthusiastic about the deep powder snow on Monte della Neve. Is it the food, the panorama, the firn run or just the name of the hut that makes you dizzy with happiness? Anything is possible in the Carosello 3000 mountain restaurant. (www.livigno.eu)
